This territory was inhabited since Prehistory, as can be seen in the archaeological station Necropolis of Pardieiro, 7km southwest of S. Martinho, which revealed some characteristics of the community that lived there 2500 years ago (I Iron Age). Next to the eleven tombs of the necropolis were found epigraphed stelae, that is, stone slabs with inscriptions in the Southwest writing, the first form of alphabetic writing in the Iberian Peninsula. Martinho won the dispute, since there was installed in the eighteenth century the Mother Church, of Baroque, Rococo and neoclassical inspiration, built under the auspices of the Order of Santiago de Espada.
