From the 8th century onwards, the Moors settled in this region, a people who would definitively recognize the strategic importance of this town, giving rise to its demographic growth. In fact, it was during the Muslim occupation that the first fortifications appeared, one in the 9th century and the other in the 12th century, due to the population's growth in size and number of inhabitants. Finally, from the 13th century onwards, Elvas became an integral part of the Portuguese kingdom and acquired its status as a fortress city during the Portuguese Restoration War, from 1640 to 1668. This status was due to the fact that this was the closest route to reach the Portuguese capital, Lisbon, and therefore there was a need to protect it.
