Contact me for more information or to schedule a visit! ____________ Situated on a fertile plain offering views of numerous settlements, Aguiar is one of the youngest civil parishes in the municipality of Viana do Alentejo. It was established in 1985 by a decree-law dated April 18 of that year. It was originally named "Agar"—a place name that some authors link to a woman of Arab origin, while others point to an origin related to eagles and the possible historical presence of this species in the parish's territory. A local scholar even refers to the area as a place "once populated by the eagles that gave it its name." Indeed, Dr. Pedro Ferreira’s theory in his *Tentativa Etimológica* (Etymological Attempt) aligns with this view. According to him, "Aguiar" derives from the Late Latin *aquilare*, meaning "abounding in eagles." The Roman presence in the area—as we shall see later—is almost certainly linked to this version of the parish's name. Settlement in the area dates back to Roman times; the military road connecting Beja to Évora passed through here, and traces of it remained until just a few years ago. Even older is the *Anta do Zambujeiro* (Zambujeiro Dolmen), which served as a site for the worship of the dead during the Neolithic period. The settlement received a royal charter (*foral*) in 1287, granted by King Dinis, and a new charter from King Manuel I on November 20, 1516. It was once the property of the Counts-Barons of Alvito. In ecclesiastical matters, the Marquises of Louriçal held the right to nominate the parish priests; Pinho Leal, in *Portugal Antigo e Moderno*, recounts a curious episode from Aguiar's modern history. In October 1860, King Pedro V and his brother, Infante João, arrived here unexpectedly; they went to the parish priest's house, where he had nothing to offer them but bread and local cheese—and even that had to be purchased elsewhere, as nothing else could be found in the village on such short notice. The travelers ate the cheese and drank wine from an unglazed clay pitcher.
