In the heart of the Lima Valley, the castiça and peculiar beauty of the oldest village in Portugal hides deep roots and ancestral legends. It was Queen D. Teresa who, on the distant date of March 4,1125, granted a charter of the village, referring to it as Terra de Ponte. Pedro I, considering the geostrategic position of Ponte de Lima, had it walled, so the final result was a medieval burgh surrounded by walls and nine towers, of which two still remain, several traces of the remaining ones and of the entire defensive structure of then, making access to the village through six gates. The bridge, which gave its name to this noble land, has always acquired a great importance throughout the Alto Minho, considering it was the only safe passage of the Lima River, in all its length, until the late Middle Ages. From the 18th century onwards, the urban expansion began and with it the destruction of the wall that surrounded the village. The opulent manor houses that the nobility of the time was responsible for spreading began to flourish throughout the district of Ponte de Lima. Over time, Ponte de Lima was adding to its natural beauty magnificent Gothic, Mannerist, Baroque, Neoclassical and 19th century facades, significantly increasing the historical, cultural and architectural value of this unique corner in all of Portugal.
