The municipality is bordered to the northwest by the municipality of Velas, being bathed by the Atlantic Ocean in all other directions. The island of S. Jorge was discovered in the mid-fifteenth century, and began its settlement between 1439 and 1470. Calheta was elevated to a town and municipality in 1534, by D. João III. The economy of the municipality was integrated into the island and was based on the cultivation of vines and wheat and the export of pastel and heather to the dyeing factories of Flanders and Europe, experiencing at that time some economic development. The Spanish occupation and the fact that it did not offer good ports of refuge meant that the island of S. Jorge did not prosper like the neighbouring islands.
